On Saturday, the Google Doodle commemorates the start of Spring 2021 in the Northern Hemisphere. The spring season of 2021 begins on March 20 and ends on June 21. The Spring Equinox, which occurs on the first day of the season, is a day when the duration of the day and night are equal. Equinox is derived from the Latin words for fair and night. Night and day will be 12 hours long almost anywhere on the planet.
The Equinox is used to signal the start of a new season, as the light balance changes to make days longer than nights. It heralds the end of the winter season and heralds the arrival of warmer weather.
The sun rises directly in the east and sets directly in the west on the day of the equinox. If you’re facing those directions at other times of the year, it seems off-centre.
Every year, the equinoxes occur in March and September. In March, the sun crosses the celestial equator — the imaginary line in the sky above the Earth’s equator — from south to north, and vice versa. In September, the sun crosses the celestial equator from north to south.
This year’s Google Doodle celebrates Spring 2021 with an animated hedgehog with flowers on its back instead of spikes. It also features honey bees buzzing around it, as well as red and blue flowers that spell out the word “Google.”
