Thursday is Maha Shivratri. Maha Shivratri is observed by Lord Shiva devotees all over the world. One of the most popular Hindu festivals is the ‘Great Night of Lord Shiva.’ Maha Shivratri is observed on the Hindu calendar’s ‘Chaturdashi Krishna Paksha,’ or 14th day of the New Moon period in the month of ‘Phalguna.’ Devotees bathe in the Ganga or other nearby rivers on Shivratri and visit Shiva temples with milk, fruits, and other offerings. Holding a strict fast is also an integral part of the Shivratri rituals.

Maha Shivratri Puja Vidhi
Fasting on Maha Shivratri is a long-standing custom. On Shivratri, devotees take a holy dip in the river and visit a Shiva temple nearby for darshan and puja. An abhishek (bathing Shiva idols) is done the next day in temples. Milk, rose water, sandalwood paste, yoghurt, honey, ghee, sugar, and water are among the ingredients used in the abhishek. While chanting mantras, devotees also pour a mixture of all of these things on the Shivling.
Various products are available, including bilipatra and dhatura flowers, as well as a variety of fruits. Some devotees eat fruits and drink coconut water while fasting for the whole day. Some devotees perform nirjala upvaas, or fasts, in which they do not even drink water. Maha Shivratri puja is performed during the night in all four prahars. Prahar denotes the various times of the day. In India, a day is divided into eight three-hour cycles known as ashta prahar.
